January 22nd is George Balanchine's hundredth birthday, and for the rest of 2004 the Russo-American ballet master, who died in 1983, will be getting the centennial treatment. His company, New York City Ballet, is devoting its winter and spring seasons to his work. Miami City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and the Suzanne Farrell Ballet--all Balanchine specialists--are presenting anniversary programs.

It will be a good year for rarity-snagging. PBS's excellent 1984 documentary "Balanchine" will be rebroadcast on January 14th. The Museum of Television and Radio will show telecasts of N.Y.C.B.--in the fifties and sixties, its glory years--performing "Concerto Barocco," "Liebeslieder Walzer," and "The Nutcracker," with Balanchine having a good time playing Drosselmeyer.
