Client engagement, as reflected in the number of counseling sessions attended, is a predictor of improvement in behavior and psychosocial functioning in substance abusers attending treatment, according to an article in the Journal of Substance Abuse. It also offers a means of measuring subtle client changes in readiness, as in a stages-of-change model.
