"Cold Mountain," Charles Frazier's first novel, came out in 1997 and was a huge best-seller. It won a National Book Award and was turned into a big-budget movie, written and directed by Anthony Minghella and starring Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. "Cold Mountain" is a Civil War story from the Southern point of view: a righteous but disillusioned Confederate soldier, named Inman, escapes from a military hospital in Virginia, where he is recovering from a wound suffered in the siege of Petersburg, and tries to walk all the way back to his home, in North Carolina, where his plucky girlfriend (her name is Ada) awaits him.
