C.P. SNOW gave his "two cultures" lecture at a time in the late 1950s which was probably the peak of the reputation and influence of science. The accelerating growth in expenditure on research was at its most obvious. The quality of the research was remarkable, driven as it was by scientists whose experiences in the Second World War gave them the maturity to differentiate between significant problems and the random collection of information. Society at large subconsciously recognised the maturity and left them alone to pursue whatever it was they were doing.
