It is a curious world when ship designers and other luminaries point to a BBC 'Horizon' programme as evidence for urgent structural changes to strengthen merchant ships against the possibility of a freak wave. But the considerable interest in this programme (and the expertise of the scientific advice it relied upon) has caused many naval architects and ship designers to pause and consider just what weather they must now encompass in the design criteria.
