LISBON, Portugal -- Russia will face Portugal, Spain and Greece in next summer's European Championships as Georgy Yartsev's side was placed in one of the toughest of the groups in the draw made in Lisbon on Sunday.
A fascinating draw also saw rivals Germany and Holland lining up against each other in Group D and defending champion France meeting England early on in Group B.
Russia's group of death sees the team start on the opening day of the tournament, June 12, against Spain in the Algarve before facing host Portugal in the 65,000-seat stadium in Lisbon four days later. The final group game will be against Greece on June 20.
Judging by Russia's recent form against supposedly minor teams -- defeats against Albania and Georgia in the qualifiers and a loss to Japan at the last World Cup -- playing the big teams may be no worse than playing in an easy group.
Yartsev seemed to embrace the team's image as underdogs. "Portugal and Spain are obviously the favorites in the group, and we and Greece are the outsiders, so I think that takes the pressure off us," he said Sunday.
Portugal plays Spain on June 20 in Lisbon in a match that home fans will see as the undoubted highlight of the opening round. Portugal will fear its neighbor, which beat it 3-0 in a friendly in Guimaraes in September.
