SEOUL, Dec 1 Asia Pulse - South Koreans run a high risk of being exposed to HIV because the majority fail to use protection when engaging in sexual intercourse, a poll by a local health organization said Sunday.
The survey conducted by the Korean Anti-AIDS Federation on 1,955 adults nationwide found that 60 per cent of the respondents said they rarely used condoms.
The federation, in particular, said that only 11.8 per cent of the respondents were in the habit of using condoms, while 14.1 per cent and 12.9 per cent said they used them infrequently or on certain occasions. It said that 45.6 per cent of the respondents rarely used the device, with 15.4 per cent saying they have never used condoms in their lives.
The findings also revealed that of the sexually active adult population only 10.8 per cent tested themselves for the contraction of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
"The numbers reveal that the public does not believe AIDS is a serious threat to their health," said a researcher.
