THE RESUMPTION of the stalled peace talks between the government and the secessionist Moro Islamic Liberation Front appears to be in peril after Defense Secretary Eduardo Ermita accused the MILF of still harboring operatives of the regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah in Mindanao.
In an interview after the Bonifacio Day rites at Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Makati City, Ermita noted that one condition for the resumption of peace negotiations was for the MILF to denounce terrorist groups such as the JI and other criminal organizations.
Ermita noted that while top MILF leaders appeared to be adhering to this condition, MILF commanders on the ground were not.
According to Ermita, an undetermined number of JI recruits continue to receive training, particularly in bomb-making, inside MILF territories on Mt. Cararao in Lanao del Norte and Mt. Vietnam in Lanao del Sur.
Ermita, a member of the government negotiating panel before he assumed the defense portfolio, said that each batch of trainees consisted of at least 12 men, mostly Indonesians. There were also MILF recruits participating in training exercises, he added.
