MILITANTS are up in arms against the proposed national ID system, branding it a plot to kill human rights and the civil liberties of the Filipino people. They also threatened to go back to the streets to protest the "repressive" measure.
The Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) predicted yesterday that the proposed ID system will face stiff opposition in Congress and in the parliament of the streets.
"The proposed national ID system will be challenged in the streets, in the Supreme Court and the court of public opinion," said Pamalakaya spokesperson Gerry Corpuz.
President Macapagal-Arroyo, who is strongly pushing for a national ID, has asked Congress to prioritize the passage of the National ID System Act.
Pamalakaya said that if the law is passed, militant groups, human rights advocates and civil liberty organizations " will not hesitate to go back to the streets to oppose the draconian measure, like they did in 1998 during the Ramos administration."
