THE PRESIDENTIAL bid of actor Fernando Poe Jr. is showing signs of imploding, just days after he announced his candidacy for the 2004 elections on Wednesday.
Poe made the announcement amid the most inauspicious circumstances. He did it unilaterally and without official opposition blessings.
The main opposition party, the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP), is still locked in the process of selecting the standard-bearer of the "united" opposition and has not yet completed its "road show" that is intended to crystallize the sentiments of its rank and file.
Showing disrespect for and impatience over the process, the politically inexperienced Poe jumped the gun on it. His premature decision indicated his go-it-alone and one-man-band political instincts, exposing the fatal disarray of the opposition and its glaring lack of discipline, even before it could mount a serious campaign for 2004.
Poe's announcement resulted in offending Sen. Panfilo Lacson, a determined aspirant for the presidency, and in making him stonewall on his presidential intentions. Lacson believes that the road show process, initiated by LDP leader Sen. Edgardo Angara, was pushing him out of the selection process to make way for Poe.
