ILOILO CITY-Members of the groups of militant women and guest relations officers here want to scrap the city's condom ordinance that aims to combat the possible rash of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV-AIDS.
Gabriela and the GROs said the ordinance, which targets a 100 percent condom use in all entertainment establishments, violates their human rights.
Gabriela recently staged a picket at city hall while the group composed of GROs working at a leading entertainment center in the city said they would take legal action.
Ordinance No. 2002-237, otherwise known as the 100 percent Condom Use Ordinance, requires owners of entertainment establishments to display and make available condoms for their clients and workers. It also requires owners to encourage entertainers to carry condoms and help educate customers how to use them.
Sex workers have to submit themselves for medical check-up every week. Establishments found violating the ordinance would be fined from P1,000 to P2,000 or temporarily closed down up to 15 days.
