By Seo Ji-eun A leading think tank said in a recent report that Korea needed to build over 20 new towns nationwide over the coming decade for the long-term stabilization of the nation's housing market. The Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, affiliated with the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, presented a report on a comprehensive housing plan for 2003-2012 to Cho Jong-chan, the minister of construction and transportation, and other government officials at the Gwacheon government complex, south of Seoul, Saturday.
According to the report, the nation will need about 429 square kilometers of new residential areas by 2012 to host 4.38 million new housing units.
Broken down by area, 2.41 million houses will be needed in the Seoul metropolitan area and 1.97 million in other regions. Construction of those units will require 232 square kilometers of land near Seoul and 196 square kilometers outside the capital region.
