ONE of the best parts of planning a holiday is telling friends and family where you are going. For me, it was taking a river cruise on the River Shannon in Ireland, to which I get respones like "oh, how lovely - I'd love to do that". But nobody I know ever does.
It all began in a 2+2 motor cruiser - the Carlow Class to be exact. It was rather like a small caravan with all the mod cons including shower and toilet.
This wasn't all about speedster, Jeremy Clarkson-style roaring V8 engines. This was life in the slow lane, the Irish way, with a top cruising speed of about 7mph.
The week's cruise began at Banagher, right in the heart of Southern Ireland, between Lough Derg and Lough Ree.
