Landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) claimed 2,540 lives and injured 4,243 others in the central province of Quang Tri from the end of the American war (1975) to 2002, according to results of recent surveys in the province released in Hanoi yesterday.
Eighty-three percent of the total victims were male and the vast majority of accidents occurred among children and young adults. Over 51% of all injuries and fatalities occurred among those 21 years old or younger and 73% were among those 30 years of age or younger.
