When reading the October 20 "Defending Freedom" issue, I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw your salute to Julia Brown in the "Heroes of the JBS" article!
I have been fighting Communism for as many years as the John Birch Society, and during a portion of those years I had the privilege to meet and know Julia. A group of concerned citizens here in Cleveland started what we called "The Organization to Fight Communism" in the late 1950s and early 1960s. We worked with the Cleveland Police Department and the Cleveland FBI and members of the Congress. Julia came to many of our meetings and was our guest speaker on many occasions, She was a totally genuine, courageous woman, and I am so grateful for your public acknowledgment of her efforts.
She had the same setbacks as the rest of us in trying to make people believe that Communism was not dead. I remember her telling me how so many black Americans just called her an "Uncle Tom" and would not listen to her or believe what she actually lived through!
Thanks, too, for your excellent magazine--it's a ray of hope in a world of evil and hopelessness.
