Many batteries deliver less than their labels imply, at least when it comes to cold-cranking amps. This often-touted measure of starting current at 0[degrees]F is important in frigid climes, where thickened engine oil and reduced battery capacity make starting harder.
Only one battery in this report, the Nascar NXDT34, matched its claimed CCA based on our real-world tests. Our latest findings also show that some handle the cold better than others, regardless of their claims. Cold starting is only one battery attribute that can stand between you and a tow truck, however. Some models are likely to last longer and take you farther if your charging system fails.
