Folding handles and front-mounted hoses are among the features you'll find as manufacturers compete in a tough market. Companies are also pushing low prices; nearly half of all vacs purchased last year cost less than $100, compared with 34 percent in 2000,
But as we found, some of those eye-catching innovations and low prices involve a trade-off in performance. Our tests of 49 vacuums also show that distinctions between uprights and canisters continue to blur. What's more, several "improved" models of both types worked no better than their forebears.
