But today there are many different contraceptive options available and here Dr Christine Horrocks, consultant in contraception and sexual health at BUPA Women's Health Centre, answers your common questions.
What are the key factors couples should consider when choosing a method of contraception?
IT'S important for couples to understand how effective each method is, not just at preventing pregnancy but also at blocking the transmission of sexually-transmitted infections (STIs).
They should also be aware of the advantages and disadvantages, along with any side-effects and risks. They can then make an informed choice about which method is suitable for their individual circumstances.
