Australia's government accused opposition parties Tuesday of reopening the doors to people-smuggling after they blocked a bid to make it even more difficult for would-be asylum seekers to land in Australia.

Minor parties and independents combined with Labor in the upper house Senate to overturn a government regulation introduced on November 4 following the arrival of a boat carrying 14 illegal immigrants at Melville Island, north of Darwin.
