It is understandable why Mr. Justin Ertelt (Letter to the Editor, October 6 issue) might be slighted when he thought John McManus was rejecting alternative energy sources--particularly wind turbines--out of hand in his "The Sky Is Falling! Or Is It?" article (September 8 issue). Why should we not avail ourselves of "free" energy? There are several factors I suspect Mr. Ertelt may not be aware of.
To avoid "wind blocking" and turbulence, there is a limit to the number of windmills that can be accommodated on a parcel of land. Under ideal circumstances this limits the power available to about 17 kilowatts per acre. The practical limit, however, is about 5.8 kilowatts per acre.
