Wine lovers have an extra reason for rejoicing this holiday season: The odds of finding good-quality wines at low prices are increasing. That's the result, in part, of two developments whose effects can be seen in our latest Ratings of chardonnay and merlot, America's top-selling white and red varietals.
A glut of grapes in California and elsewhere means that a sea of surplus wine has been available for low prices. That helps explain the existence of one of the past year's hottest sellers: Charles Shaw, sold only at Trader Joe's stores and priced as low as $2 a bottle (thus its nickname, Two-Buck Chuck).
