IBM has widened its recall of G51 and G51t Touch Screen computer monitors, first announced in March, to include an additional 63,000 units that could overheat, smoke, and possibly catch fire. At issue is a potentially faulty circuit-board component.
The recall now includes 119,000 products in the U.S. Since 2001, seven cases of overheated circuit boards have been reported worldwide, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. This includes one report of slight property damage and another report of minor smoke inhalation.
The recalled monitors have a 15-inch screen. Most of the G51 monitors were sold at national chains such as Best Buy, CompUSA, and Radio Shack, for about $370. Some were sold by IBM commercial resellers; others were distributed directly by IBM to customers. MicroTouch Systems, one of IBM's business partners, sold most of the G51t monitors.
Consumers should stop using these monitors immediately and contact IBM to see whether the unit is subject to recall and to arrange for shipping and inspection.
