To stem the widespread copying of music online, the Recording Industry Association of America recently began suing people who use peer-to-peer (P2P) software to share copyrighted music via the Internet. The RIAA has announced settlements in 52 of the 261 lawsuits it filed against individuals accused of sharing more than 1,000 copyrighted songs; one settlement, for $2,000, involved a 12-year-old. The association has threatened to file hundreds more suits.
If your personal Internet account is used to share copyrighted music illegally, you may be responsible even if the sharing is done without your knowledge or permission.
