Let's make one thing clear at the outset: There was no food fight.

When I mention to folks that the Manatee Herald-Tribune editorial board periodically hosts thank-you dinners for the readers who've contributed letters and guest columns, I often get a chuckle in response.

People assume we're blithely walking into a free-for-all.

It sort of makes sense, I suppose. After all, we're gathering some of the most opinionated, outspoken residents of our communities in one room. Sparks -- or dinner rolls -- are bound to fly, right?
