May I share with P. A. Crush some facts about the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and air pollution sources ("Destructive policy", November 19).
Private cars account for only 1 per cent of the air pollution in Hong Kong. This is because the EPD has required that all new vehicles have a Euro III emissions standard for quite a while now. The vast majority of the 18,000 taxis which are on the road 24 hours a day are now using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), instead of diesel, because of the EPD. It has also lobbied hard within government for "incentive subsidies" for the minibus owners so that, this year and next, most minibuses will be upgraded to LPG or Euro III standard.
