LAKERS
1 POWER POLL RANKING
RENOVATIONS: There's no place for subtlety in Hollywood, and the Lakers' offseason changes were anything but subtle. Armed with only $6.5 million in cap space and backed by the support of C Shaquille O'Neal, G.M. Mitch Kupchak landed veterans PF Karl Malone and PG Gary Payton, creating an absurd super team that will be the focus of the league.
CORNERSTONE: As he has said time and again, the Lakers win when they throw the ball in to O'Neal. Conditioning has been a problem for him over the past few offseasons, when he has dealt with various surgeries. But he promises to be in good shape this time around. If so, he has the power, athleticism and basketball I.Q. to bring together this star laden club. The Lakers obviously have talent, but, make no mistake, the ball must go through the big guy for the team to work.
FRAMEWORK: The Lakers will be a circus act, something coach Phil Jackson is familiar with from his days with the Bulls. They will run the triangle offense, which should be a good fit for Payton, one of the best post-up guards in the league. The offense will work well for Malone, too, if he is content to rack up weak-side rebounds and take 12-foot jumpers. SG Kobe Bryant, dealing with a sexual assault charge, will have to stay focused and adjust his game by taking fewer shots and moving the ball. Though Payton, 35, and Malone, 40, are graybeards, the addition of the veterans represents a significant upgrade on defense, where the Lakers had employed PF Samaki Walker and PG Derek Fisher. The pieces for a dominant season are all there, if Jackson can get them to fit.
RANK ON IT: O'Neal will be back under 350 pounds and will be in line for MVP consideration again.--Sean Deveney
