A long memory is not necessary to know the Marlins' history in the World Series, but remembering the Cubs' appearances in the Fall Classic is another story. Go back far enough, though, and you'll find the Cubs have been involved in some of the more memorable World Series, including showdowns with the Red Sox and the Yankees. The Sporting News was there to witness all of them. Thread the microfilm, please.

1918: Red Sox-Cubs

"Boston's American League Red Sox are again champions of the baseball world and thus keep their record clean.... The Red Sox have been victors in five (Series)."

Eighty-five years later, they're still at five.

The last time the Sox ruled the baseball world, they beat Chicago in six games despite being outscored in the series, 10-9 (the Dead Ball Era was alive and well). Babe Ruth won two games as a pitcher in this Series. Two years later, he cracked 54 home runs for the Yankees.

"Every World's Series produces a 'goat,' and (Cubs right fielder) Max Flack was it in the one that finished Wednesday.... Flack is not only blamed for losing the sixth game, but he is also charged with the defeat in (Game 4).... In that contest he was caught off first base in the opening inning, and in the third round with only one out was nipped off the middle station. Not satisfied with that, he failed to play back far enough in the fourth inning with Babe Ruth at the plate and let the American League slugger get a three-base hit ... (with) two men scoring on the rap."
