Shaquille O'Neal may be overweight and an underachiever, but so what? Ask anyone in the know--as we have dozens of times--which player they'd most want on their team, and 99.9 percent will tell you they'll take the big fella. Even last season, when Shaq "struggled" in the first half, general managers in our annual top-players survey overwhelmingly voted Shaq the No. 1 player.
These are the people who know. They see Shaq dominate like a high schooler against first-graders. They see every Lakers opponent build its game plan around containing Shaq. They see that the only way to stop Shaq is to foul him, and even that doesn't work too well.
I'm always amused when a player hammers Shaq only to see the Lakers center shake off the hit like a bear flicking away a bug. The fouler then meekly apologizes with a look that says, "Sorry, man, my coach made me do it." It's so obvious they don't want Shaq mad. Who would?
He has a combination of size, speed and skill no other player has exhibited. Ever. So even when he's not at his best, he's still better than Tim Duncan and every other player on the planet.--Stan McNeal
