According to IINA, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo recognizes the Supreme Council of Muslims as one of the state institutions, but does not recognize Islam as a faith, despite the fact that Muslims constitute ten percent of the country's population. Sheikh Jamal Lumumba Ramadhan, head of the Supreme Council, said that while the government recognizes the Council, it does not recognize as public holidays such festivities as the Muslim Eid occasions.
