Nothing short of a revolution will stop what has become a crisis of conscience and integrity for colleges and universities in this country," declared Gordon Gee, chancellor of Vanderbilt University TN. "There is a wrong culture in sports and I'm declaring war on it."
He started on September 9, when he announced that the school would eliminate its athletics department. Instead it will create an Office of Student Athletics, Recreation and Health, combining the programs and operations of varsity sports with intramurals, recreation and community sports.

This is the first time a Division I president has moved to integrate athletics into the mainstream of the college, seen as a first step toward curbing the abuses of collegiate athletics.
Gee said the plan reaffirms three university decisions:
1. Vanderbilt will stay in the NCAA Division I-A.
2. Vanderbilt commits to be a competitive force in the Southeastern conference, but "we intend on competing consistent with the values of a world-class university."
