Embarrassed by high-profile student athletes who break the law, the University of Wisconsin-Madison announced a new crack down on offenders in August.
Effective immediately, athletes who are arrested, charged or convicted of any violation of a law involving drugs, gambling or violence will face immediate suspension. They cannot compete or practice with their team, but can still use the academic center, the weight room and sports medicine facility.
Athletes have 72 hours to appeal the suspension to a committee that can reinstate them. Coaches are free to have their own team rules as well, especially on alcohol.
Barry Alverez, Wisconsin's football coach who will also become athletic director in spring 2004, said the new policy is "fair and equal to everyone." He has been criticized for letting players compete until their cases made their way through the courts, ...
