Two women who say they were raped by athletes as students at the University of Washington and the University of Georgia have filed suits against the schools.
* At the University of Georgia, a former student has filed a $25 million suit against the school, three male athletes and several university officials.
Her suit seeks $10 million in compensatory and $15 million in punitive damages for the school failing to prevent and respond to the alleged rape, violating Title IX.
Charges stem from her account of a night in January 2002, when former basketball player Tony E. Cole allegedly invited her to his room and had sex with her while football player Brandon Williams hid from her in the closet, she said. He emerged and tried to have sex with her, which she resisted. Then basketball player Steven Thomas entered the room and raped her, she said.
Williams was acquitted of the rape charge in August, and criminal charges against the others were dropped.
Her lawsuit accuses the university of failing to properly respond to her complaint until 10 months after the incident, when it held a disciplinary hearing against the athletes, and did not notify her of the results. She said the school was guilty of "deliberate indifference" to sexual assault when it admitted and gave an athletics scholarship to Tony Cole, who already had a sexual assault charge against him at the Community College of Rhode Island.
"They had knowledge of this guy's history," said her lawyer, George W. McGriff. ...
