Claiming it would be too expensive, College Board officials say the new PSAT will not include an essay section comparable to that of the highly-touted revised SAT. About 2.6 million high school students take the test each year.
High school guidance counselors are complaining that the new PSAT, sort of a dry run for students getting ready for the SAT, fails to prepare them for the real thing. "How are they going to know how they are going to do on the writing sample if they haven't done it before?" asked Francine Block, a counselor with American College Admissions Consultants.
PSAT director Beth A. Robinson said adding an essay part would probably double the cost from the current $10.50, outpricing some students and delaying results.
