We have long had a soft spot for Barclays' Matt Barrett, not least for his intriguing marriage a few years back to a model who had the endearing habit of posing naked. Presumably in this spirit, Barclays has been sultrily gyrating to the "Dance of the Seven Veils" for the past several weeks, in deciding its top management succession.
The bank's bump-and-grind has resulted in the controversial decision to make John Varley the new chief executive - replacing Matt, who will hopefully move up to become chairman. We applaud this decision, notwithstanding Matt's mighty gaffe over credit cards to a committee of parliamentary MPs.
