An Australian mechanic faced court charged with the outback murder of a British tourist in 2001.

Bradley John Murdoch, 45, appeared briefly in Darwin Magistrates Court charged with the murder of Briton Peter Falconio on a remote Northern Territory roadside.

Murdoch was also charged with deprivation of liberty and the unlawful assault of Falconio's girlfriend Joanne Lees, who managed to escape her attacker.

He did not enter a plea or apply for bail and the case was adjourned until November 28 to give the defence time to examine prosecution materials.
