When Advanstar Communications Chairman-CEO Robert Krakoff pulled the trigger in August on his company's $135 million acquisition of Thomson's Medical Economics unit, he was confident Advanstar could cut costs from its new group.

"Part of that is just a function of scale,'' Krakoff said. "If you take a $90 million business and add it onto a $300 million business, you create opportunities of scale.''
