Omaha, Neb. -- Nebraska Furniture Mart has grown from a small basement shop opened in 1937 to a home furnishings megastore here, and this summer added a second giant store in metro Kansas City. With both youth and infant furniture and accessories in its mix, NFM is a force to be reckoned with in kids retailing.
Its philosophy is simple: Offer customers the best selection, price and salespeople. But this retailer really takes it to the top. In addition to furniture, NFM sells appliances, electronics and flooring, and has had a healthy infant furniture program in place as long as anyone can remember.
The Omaha store consists of 450,000 square feet in three buildings on 77 acres of land, and includes a clearance center that also features youth and infant furniture.
The Kansas City, Kan., store, opened in August, carries everything under one roof in 712,000 square feet. "We try to accommodate our customers' needs as best we can," said Stacy Coziahr, Kansas City marketing manager. "The Kansas City store is designed according to how the customers told us they wanted it."
The youth and infant areas in both stores take up about 10,000 square feet of floor space.
