The John Birch Society set out early to build up a properly staffed educational army that would have national direction but be organized and active on the local level. It is not a mailing list but a truly grass-roots organization representing a beautiful cross section of America. The Society's members come from all walks of life and backgrounds. They recognize that defending freedom is their responsibility they cannot merely send in dues to some national headquarters and delegate that task to lobbyists in Washington, ton, D.C.
