This wonderful account has all the elements of a great romantic novel, including star-crossed young lovers, an unwanted and hidden pregnancy, and diplomatic and romantic intrigue, cast against the setting of the final years of the independent Venetian Republic. But this is truth, not fiction, which adds a special poignancy to an absorbing but rather sad story. Di Robilant was born in Italy, educated at Columbia University, and is currently a correspondent for the Italian newspaper Las Stampa. When his father discovered a cache of letters in their ancestral home in Venice, it eventually revealed a long but ill-fated love affair between their eighteenth-century ancestor Andrea Memmo and an Anglo-Venetian young woman, Giustiniana Wynne.
