TEENAGE surfer Bethany Hamilton spoke for the first time yesterday about the moment a shark rose from the depths and bit off her arm.

The 15ft tiger shark attacked the 13-year-old surfing champion as she lay on her board off the coast of Hawaii.

Bethany, one of America's best female amateurs, had her left arm torn off below the shoulder and a huge bite taken out of her board.

She said from her hospital bed: "My arm was hanging in the water and it just came and bit me. It was pulling me back and forth and then it let me go. I tried to paddle using my good arm."
