Kerala, which has been predominantly an exporter of agriculture commodities, has been slowly changing its farmer-driven export profile and moving its focus to non-agricultural exports.

A move in this direction is the setting up of two special economic zones (SEZs) in the state-Cochin Export Processing Zone and the proposed port-based SEZ in Kochi.
