With opening day near, the prognosticators get to do their thing. All the experts really are going out on a limb this year by picking the Yankees.

Wow. You guys have guts. And if you're not picking the Yankees, you're taking the Red Sox. Or the Cardinals, Braves, Angels or Marlins. Or predicting Barry Bonds will be the MVP.

The No. 1 reason this is a great game is because it's played on the field, not in the public forum of your favorite sports talk show. Fans and prognosticators look at rosters like a collection of baseball cards. If teams sign guys fans have heard of, they think their team will be better.

But sometimes the best move is the one not made. The Red Sox did not trade for Alex Rodriguez before last season, then made a big move at the trading deadline. Look how those decisions paid off.

The major work of the general managers is pretty much done by this point in the spring. They have scoured the waiver wire, signed their free agents and made their trades. It's time for the pieces to fall into place before picking the right 25 players for the roster. These last few ...
