[1] WAS IT MADNESS?

The Demons got him

So, will the Wake Forest-West Virginia game stand as an NCAA Tournament classic? Not if you picked Wake Forest to win the national championship.

Twice.

I picked Wake No. 1 in our season preview issue. Given a chance to re-evaluate that before the tournament, I figured it would be a cop-out to jump off a team that went 26-5 and earned a No. 2 seed. A cop-out, maybe, but smart.

The Demon Deacons are my first preseason No. 1 to fall short of the Sweet 16 since 1998. (For what it's worth: Now that Wake's out, I like North Carolina to win it all.) Five of my six previous picks reached the Final Four, and three won the championship.

Does it mitigate my Wake blunder that each time I reiterated my faith in the Demon Deacons, I qualified that with concern about their defensive consistency? No, because it means I should have known better. Twice.--Mike DeCourcy
