Just 10 short years ago, The Citadel--The Military College of South Carolina, made history for its resistance to admitting its first female cadet. In 1993, Shannon Faulkner, the woman who applied to join its all-male corps of cadets, had been accepted and then rejected for admission.
In 1995 she finally won admission to The Citadel, after a Supreme Court ruling that another public military school--Virginia Military Institute--must admit women.
Although Faulkner lasted less than a week as a Citadel cadet, her legacy paved the way for a fundamental transformation of the role of women at the school.
