When society's expectations collide with how a woman leader views her role, the result is akin to the Bermuda Triangle. Much like the Caribbean locale where planes and ships suddenly go missing, many women leaders simply disappear before even reaching the glass ceiling.
Women can be punished for leading in the same ways for which men have been rewarded, said Dr. Susan Fritz, associate dean of the college of agricultural sciences and natural resources at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. The male model of leadership precludes the characteristics of nurturing and caring, for which women are noted and expected to utilize.
