TOKYO, March 23 Asia Pulse - Toyota Motor Corp. (TSE:7203) on Tuesday rolled out two luxury sport utility vehicle models with gasoline-electric hybrid systems, the first hybrid SUVs in Japan.

The carmaker released hybrid versions of the Harrier and Kluger SUVs, expanding its hybrid vehicle lineup to nine models.

They can go 17.8km per liter of gasoline -- about twice as far as gasoline-only autos.

Because SUVs require more power than smaller cars, Toyota developed a 272-horsepower hybrid system that outmuscles its current hybrid vehicles by 52 horsepower.
