The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) was founded and organized by spinal-cord-injured patients home from the battlefields of WWII. Medical treatment of these paralyzed warriors was minimal at best, and rehab was even more so. Doctors in the armed forces and veterans hospitals had never dealt with the influx of paraplegics, and no knowledgeable treatment was available. The veterans survived the war but were unable to survive the care for their wounds.
A lesser-known fact concerning PVA's founding was the involvement of three physicians who contributed to the cause. Their efforts were invaluable to the formation of our organization.
