Indianapolis-based Omnicity Inc. has struck a deal with 29 rural electric cooperatives to be the preferred provider of wireless Internet service in the state.

The agreement announced last week with Service Concepts, which represents the REMCs, still requires individual cooperatives to negotiate a deal with Omnicity. The Indianapolis firm is providing wireless Internet in the form of a marketing agreement with the REMCs or by providing them the actual equipment.

The service is provided via antennas placed atop existing cellular phone or radio towers. Customers receive signals on modems sporting a thumb-sized antenna. Pricing starts at $23 a month--slightly more for faster speeds.
