As a result of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's first year of dynamic rollover testing, CONSUMER REPORTS has pulled its recommendations from several models. We no longer recommend the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Escape, or Toyota Tacoma because they tipped up on two wheels in NHTSA's test. Nor do we recommend the corporate twins of those vehicles, including the OMC Yukon and Mazda Tribute. The redesigned 2005 Tacoma has not been tested yet.
The agency introduced its dynamic rollover test at the beginning of this year and now has rollover ratings for 70 cars, SUVs, pickups, and minivans. Most notable among its results are that 17 of 46 SUVs and pickups are listed as tipping up in the dynamic test. Those numbers include separate ratings for two- and four-wheel-drive versions of some models. No cars or minivans have tipped up so far.
