For big, bright, vivid images, a plasma TV has no equal. These flat panels have a definite wow factor, especially when displaying high-definition (HD) images.

A mere 4 to 6 inches thick, plasma sets are the slimmest big-screen option. Most screens measure about 32 to 63 inches diagonally; 42-inch sets are among the best sellers.

The nature of plasma technology accounts for both the trim profile and the vivid colors, even in light-filled rooms. Thousands of pixels sandwiched between glass panels contain gas that is converted into "plasma" by an electrical charge. The plasma causes phosphors on the screen to glow red, green, or blue.
